Step 1

See your Dr. or Physical Therapist even if you think you don't need to!

Safety:

Safety is the #1 reason to consult your doctor before starting an exercise program or changing your diet. Unknown health concerns may put you at risk of death or injury. For instance, many of the clients I see for their initial consultation have high blood pressure. In extreme cases, exercising improperly while suffering from high blood pressure can result in death. Seeing your doctor is of particular importance if your goal is weight loss of 10 lbs or more or if you are currently experiencing chronic symptoms of any kind. Safety, however, should only be your most important reason to visit the doctor.

Motivation:

Your doctor just might be your best motivator. Having goals has proved to be the best way to insure success. Having health or fitness goals keeps your eye on the prize. It provides you with a great reason not to skip a workout. In addition; if your doctor  prescribes exercise you may be able to defray the cost of your membership or personal trainer. Contact your insurance company, physical therapist or chiropractor for more information or follow this link.

If you're lucky enough to not be ordered to the gym by your doctor, don't worry, they're many other sources of motivation available. A consultation with your physical therapist or personal trainer will point you in the right direction.

Efficiency:

Exercise efficiently, work on your goals without being derailed by injury. Chronic muscular and joint aches and pains can often be resolved through exercise. However, improper excise selection or movements can also exacerbate these conditions. Recurring aches and pains may be a sign of more severe underlying conditions. If you experience recurring complaints see a professional.  For example; lower back pain may be the symptom of a herniated disk. Doing exercises like crunches may cause further injury to the spine. Insure that you meet your goals efficiently and safely. Make sure you're doing the right exercises that are best for you! Consult with your doctors and then your personal trainer to make sure you are on the path to success.

Following you appointment with your Physical therapist you should have a better idea of what type of exercise you need.

PAR-Q: Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire

Physical activity is an integral part of a healthy lifestyle. Before engaging in a fitness program it is essential to determine your physical activity readiness.

 Please read the following carefully.

Questions

1.            Have you ever been diagnosed with heart problems?

2.            Do you have frequent chest or heart pain?

3.            Do you experience spells of dizziness or faintness?

4.            Has your doctor ever expressed concern about elevated or high blood pressure?

5.            Have you ever been diagnosed with joint or bone problems that can be aggravated by exercise?

6.            Do you often experience joint or bone pain when exercising?

7.            Do you know of any reasons that you should not exercise?

8.            Do you think you may have a condition that may be aggravated by exercise?

If the answers to any of the questions stated above are yes, or you are unsure of the answer, please consult with your physician before exercising. If you answered no to all the questions I would still recommend seeing your physician before starting. You may have underlying Physical Conditions you are unaware of.
